Here I am, writing a new entry for my new blog!

So how did we get here?
To answer that, let’s rewind through the platforms I have interacted with…

Past

Back in the early days, I used Twitter.

It has decent discoverability, your tweets can be retweeted and promoted across the platform.
The post made are also sharable and visible to everyone.

But ultimately it’s a town square, a social platform, users are expected to converse in it too.
And over the recent years, the platform has accrued a certain unpleasant culture which I rather distance myself from.

There’s also the fact it’s a microblog, it’s not the ideal space to post long form text content, without me splitting my single post into multiple tweets across a thread.

Present

Back to the present, I use Discord which took over most of my social.

All messages sent in discord are only visible to the server they are sent in, with the same condition on message links.
Normally that’s all a good thing, not when you want to share a message across multiple servers, or outside of Discord.

You would have to repost the same message by copy and pasting, or send inaccessible screenshots of text to share within discord, or out of it.
There’s also no way to make amends, or clarifications to mistakes or provide update in a situation.

Drop in reach

Notice the drastic drop in reach? These changes are for the worst, I am loosing my own platform and ability to share information.
While we are at it, let’s give a glance over other possible platforms:

Something like medium is fine, but it seems more professional orientated, there’s also the “limited reads” and very pushy UX that made me steer away.
An alternative activity pub based social media might be fine, they generally have much more generous character limits, but really I don’t want to manage another social media.
There’s also Pastebin or HackMD which probably works if you just want something that works with minimal effort.

Conclusion

With all that out of the way, that’s how I arrived at this, starting my own blog.

Maybe there is another alternative I have missed, but I wasn’t trying hard to find an alternative to starting my blogging.
I like the ability to be in control of my own blog, give it the looks and layout I wanted, there won’t be any ads, or signup nags or anything that detracts from the reading experience.

I also intentionally want to steer away from social interactions, I just want a place to post stuff and at peace with myself.
That said there are things I am willingly letting go of like discoverability, I am on my own here there’s no algorithm or users to promote my post.
But that’s okay, I am making this for the purpose of being able to share it elsewhere, and just to be able to write stuff for sake of writing it.

Honestly this is a new thing for me, I have no idea if I will ever follow up with this, or even make any more posts.
But here goes nothing, at least I can say I gave it a shot.
